Event Description

Nestled in Srinagar and built by 5th Mughal ruler, Jahangir in 1619 for his soul-mate, Noor Jahan, who was a daughter of Mirza Gyas, the prime minister in Jahangir’s court. Noor Jahan, one of the most beautiful and witty Mughal queens, is known for her administrative skill which made her a de-facto ruler. It is the best specimen of Mughal horticulture. At present, it is open to the public Nearby Shalimar Bagh, Nishat garden is also situated which is also known for its natural beauty, and therefore, it got the title “the garden of delight”.  

It is said that Jahangir enlarged the ancient garden into a royal garden to please his queen. Later on, one of the governors of Shah Jahan, Zafar Khan enlarged it in 1630 and named it as Faiz Bakh.  This garden was maintained by not only Maharaja Ranjit Singh but also other rulers as well, but it continues to be known as Shalimar Garden to the present day.

 During the rain of the Jahangir, it used to function as the summer capital; he would come here along with his entourage and stay here. He came here more than 13 times. To access this garden used to be difficult work; therefore, they would use elephants to cross the Pir Panjal range.

Mughal emperors had constructed incredible monuments & gardens during their tenure. The gem of Mughal architecture is Taj Mahal which was constructed by Shah Jahan the father of Jahangir. Architecture of Shalimar Bagh

The architecture of Shalimar Bagh is taken from Persia which is known as Iran nowadays. It is built on a plain surface and divided into three terraces with each serving a unique purpose. In those days, the outer part of this garden is known as Diwan-A-Aam for public audience while central portion is called the Diwan-A-Khas which is reserved for only for the king and his court.  The garden is spreading nearly over an area of 31 acres.
